Edisto Island Landmarks - Past and Present

Edisto Island, South Carolina,  is one of the remaining jewels along the southeast coast, still retaining much of its historic, natural and cultural heritage. Many if not most of its residents are descended from slaves who worked the island's plantations 140-plus years ago.  The land today is mostly forested or in agriculture. The waters are bountiful. And beauty is everywhere.  Edisto's semi-isolation and natural beauty has attracted a varied group of residents, including artists whose creative juices are inspired in playful ways by their surroundings.  But even here, some of the landmarks -- for example, the shrimp houses -- are disappearing
